Allow ZeroTier DNS Configuration

Max's Hub Users: This option is no longer required as of 11/15/2024 and should be left disabled (no check mark).

By default, ZeroTier ignores any DNS settings of the VPN and will continue to use your device's current DNS settings. By enabling the Allow DNS Configuration option, you can allow ZeroTier to override your device's own DNS configuration. While we cannot speak for other networks using ZeroTier, ours is configured so that we only intercept DNS queries if they are going to a maxshub.net domain. This check is done client-side.

Step 1: Open the Network in ZeroTier UI

If it's not open already, open the ZeroTier UI program so that it shows in your system tray. Hover over the network you'd like to configure.

Step 2: Allow DNS Configuration

Click the Allow DNS Configuration option. After clicking it, the ZeroTier UI will disappear. Open it again and verify that the Allow DNS Configuration now has a check next to it (shown below).

(Optional) Step 3: Verify DNS is Working

Open a command prompt window and run the following command: nslookup google.com. You should receive results that show which DNS server answered the request, and what IP address they gave for google.com.

For Max's Hub users, any domain you query with nslookup should always be answered by your own configured DNS servers. The only time this should differ is when you're querying a maxshub.net domain.
