How to Install ZeroTier

Windows Instructions

Step 1 - Download ZeroTier Installer

Visit ZeroTier's download page and click the Windows icon to download the ZeroTier One installer.

Step 2 - Run the Installer

Once the download is complete, run the installer and follow the directions. Reference the photos below for each step of the installation. You must have administrator privileges to ~~installed~~install ZeroTier One.

When the installer is complete, it will close and no new windows will open.

Step 3 - Check System Tray

The ZeroTier UI program should start automatically and can be found in your system tray. Clicking the icon will show its menu.

If you do not see ZeroTier UI in your system tray...
Try searching for and opening the application manually. Simply searching "zerotier" in the Start menu should populate the application. After opening it, check your system tray for the ZeroTier icon.

ZeroTier One vs ZeroTier UI

This section is only relevant to Windows, Debian Linux, and macOS users.

When you install the ZeroTier client on your device, you are actually installing two things: ZeroTier One and ZeroTier UI.

The actual ZeroTier program that provides a connection to our VPN is a background service called ZeroTier One. This program does not have any user interface and the only way to interact with it directly is to use the Command Prompt. This is rather inconvenient and ZeroTier understands this, so they install a second program called ZeroTier UI. ZeroTier UI provides an interface to allow you to easily control ZeroTier One. It is what you will interact with and what you'll see in help resources here.

The important thing to note is that these are two separate, independently controlled ~~programs.~~programs. If you completely close ZeroTier UI, ZeroTier One is still running in the background, meaning any connection you had to our VPN is still open. Closing ZeroTier UI (the application in your system tray), does not disconnect you from the VPN or stop ZeroTier One.

Debain Linux

Run the following command to install ZeroTier.

curl -s https://install.zerotier.com | sudo bash

After installation, use sudo zerotier-cli to ensure installation was successful.

iOS/Android

The ZeroTier One app is available on the App/Play Store. Visit ZeroTier's download page for links.

macOS

ZeroTier provides a .pkg installer which can be found on their downloads page.
